Fuller revisits her vibrant, spirited parents, first introduced in Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight, which her mother referred to as that "awful book." That so-called "awful book" focused on Fuller's memories of growing up in Rhodesia during that country's civil war, but this time the focus is solely on Fuller's parents--their youth, their meeting, and their struggles to find a home on the continent they are both so passionate about. Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness is a gorgeous tribute to Fuller's parents and the land they love.
Fuller's mother, Nicola, was the child of Scottish parents, and grew up in Kenya. Fuller's father, Tim, had an austere childhood in London. He wandered the world before arriving in Kenya and meeting Nicola. Those who have read Fuller's first memoir will recall the hardships her parents faced, including the deaths of three of their five children and the loss of their home in Rhodesia. This time, Fuller's mother, Nicola, aware that her daughter is writing another memoir, shares some of her memories under the 'Tree of Forgetfulness,' which looms large by the elder Fullers' house in Zambia. Fuller's prose is so beautiful, so evocative, that readers may feel that they, too, are sitting under that tree.
