Directed at undergraduate health management students, this book is most appropriate for an entry level course in the field. It was edited by two academics active in undergraduate health management studies, and there are contributions from over 30 authors. Author experience ranges from academic leadership at well regarded universities to hands-on management of major clinical organizations. The stated purpose of this text is to bridge the gap between "theory-based" book that are most appropriate at the graduate health management level and discipline-specific books frequently used in undergraduate management education (accounting, health law, leadership, etc.). An informal assessment mechanism was used to identify key topics for undergraduate health management students and to provide a user-friendly book with case studies and hands-on activities appropriate for a wide audience. This book is keyed toward entry-level undergraduate health management students who may or may not have had prior clinical exposure, but have an immediate occupational goal to become entry-level health professions managers. It is also appropriate for entry level clinicians at the master's level (physician assistants, nurse practitioners, physical therapists) because it provides an overview of the current U.S. healthcare environment. The editors and authors appear to be both academic and practical authorities in their areas. An overview of most important topics in the health field is provided--theories of leadership and management, quality improvement, information technology, reimbursement, patient safety, health law, human resources, etc. Every entry level health manager should have at least basic knowledge in these areas. The book is accompanied by an online instructor guide including a syllabus, PowerPoint presentations, and quizzes, making it relatively easy for new or inexperienced instructors to rapidly put together an entry level course. Case studies are included for active or problem-based learning environments.
